Earth Day Every Day of Harrisonburg, VA
“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” Anne Marie Bonneau
Plastic is a material made to last forever, yet 33 percent of all plastic – water bottles, bags and straws – are used just once and thrown away. Plastic cannot biodegrade; it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces.
Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us. Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments.
There are thousands of landfills in the United States. Buried beneath each one of them, toxic chemicals from plastics drain out and seep into groundwater, flowing downstream into lakes and rivers.
Our Nonprofit in Numbers
R’s – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot
To educate consumers about the harmful impacts of human practices and to persuade consumers to practice the 5 R’s – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot (in that order) and in collaboration with other environmental partners sponsor an annual Earth Day Festival and other activities.
We value the Earth and believe we should be stewards of the Earth, leaving the planet a better place, or at least no worse than we found it. We value community in which our work is accessible to all and in which everyone can participate and make a difference. We value realistic, attainable goals. We value a positive approach that is empowering, encourages others, and provides opportunities for success.
